Photography is an art form that transcends mediums. Whether it's dance, oil painting, pottery, or photography, having a 'creative eye' allows artists to express and demonstrate their craft. The Peabody family recognized this, seeking a simple yet striking holiday photoshoot. Our destinations were two of NYC's most iconic locations—Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO. Despite the unpredictable weather, we were determined to capture the city's essence before the daily crowds arrived.
The Brooklyn Bridge stands as a majestic emblem of New York City's magnificence. Spanning the East River, it connects Manhattan and Brooklyn, offering stunning views and a rich history. For photographers, the bridge provides a backdrop that's both majestic and versatile.
To avoid the tourist rush and capture the bridge's true essence, we arrived early. The soft morning light provided natural, diffused lighting, perfect for portraits. If you're planning a photoshoot here, aim for early mornings or late afternoons. Not only will you get the best light, but you'll also avoid the midday crowds.
With its intricate cable design and sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge offers endless photo opportunities. We positioned the Peabody family in various spots, capturing both wide-angle shots and intimate close-ups. The blend of architectural beauty and natural light made each shot unique.
Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, or DUMBO, is a trendy neighborhood that sits between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges. Known for its cobblestone streets, waterfront parks, and art galleries, DUMBO has become a favorite spot for photographers.
Unlike the vast expanses of Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO offers a more intimate setting. The juxtaposition of industrial warehouses with modern art installations creates a dynamic backdrop. For our shoot, we focused on the iconic view of the Manhattan Bridge framed between buildings on Washington Street. The result? A timeless photo that screams New York.
Like Brooklyn Bridge, timing is crucial when shooting in DUMBO. Arriving early allowed us to capture the serene beauty of the area before it became crowded. Additionally, exploring the side streets and hidden corners revealed unexpected photo opportunities, adding depth to our collection.
While clear skies are ideal for photography, don't underestimate the beauty of an overcast day. The diffused light eliminates harsh shadows, creating soft, flattering portraits. NYC weather can be unpredictable, so it's essential to stay flexible. Have a backup plan in case of rain, and bring props like umbrellas to add a creative twist to your photos. I brought a rain-guard for my camera in case it rained (it didn't).
Discuss your vision and expectations with your photographer before the shoot. Share ideas, outfits, and locations to ensure everyone is on the same page. Arrive early to make the most of the natural light and avoid the crowds. Bring essentials like water, snacks, and extra outfits to stay comfortable throughout the shoot.

Luckily, I had already been great friends with the Peabody's. They had moved into the same building as me about a week after I moved in. A photographer's skill in establishing rapport and empathically connecting with a client's vision can turn an ordinary session into unforgettable memories, ensuring that the entire experience is comfortable, creative, and enjoyable.
